Condo residents frustrated by broken elevator

Posted: Updated:

Sharon Loveless, 62, has heart trouble and bad knees. To get to and from her 4th floor unit, Sharon has to take the stairs because the elevator at Belair Condos in Rosebank, Staten Island, has been broken for three months.

A city-required upgrade to the elevator's hydraulic unit ran into trouble after water started filling its shaft. When Fox 5 arrived Friday morning, engineers were on scene pumping out water.

Edward Finkelstein, a representative for Island Condo Management, which runs the building, said people's frustration is understandable but management is requesting a little bit more patience. He said "the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible."

Fox 5 was there as the water removal ended.

By phone, Dameco Industries, the elevator company, said that if the shaft stays dry, crews can go in and make the upgrade.

Finkelstein acknowledged that his company is right in the middle of a waterlogged repair service and out of breath homeowners drawing their own conclusions.

Dameco Industries said the elevator should be working by Wednesday, because that is the day the city has scheduled the inspection.
