A 16-year-old boy trying to cool off after a hike in sweltering heat drowned while swimming in a lake at Bear Mountain State Park in the Hudson Valley.
The state parks office said the body of Jean Fritz Pierre was found just before 4 p.m. Monday after he'd been reported missing at Hessian Lake in the park.
Pierre was on a day trip from International High School in Brooklyn. Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott says the students had been on a hike when Pierre and another student decided to go into the water, even though they weren't supposed to go in. That's when Pierre drowned.
Walcott said enough supervisors were on the trip. He went to the school on Tuesday morning.
"A number of the staff were crying, students were crying," Walcott said. "It's a small school so the students know each other."
The lake is near the Orange County hamlet of Fort Montgomery, 46 miles north of New York City.
A parks office spokesman said swimming isn't allowed at Hessian Lake and so no lifeguards are on duty there.
The drowning is under investigation.
