Thefts of catalytic converters increase on West Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are warning motorists on the West Side of an increase in thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles.

The unidentified suspects crawl underneath the vehicle and cut off the catalytic converter, which is then usually sold to a scrap yard, according to a community alert from Area Central detectives.

Three Honda CRVs, two Jeep Cherokees and one Toyota pickup have been robbed of their catalytic converters in the Ogden police district, the alert said.

Motorists are encouraged to park in a well lit area, the alert said.
