Firefighter brings guitar to top of Mount Everest for charity

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

A valley firefighter climbed to great lengths for a good cause. He's working to raise money for cancer research, and he's getting help from rocker Alice Cooper.

This Alice Cooper-signed guitar has been to the top of Mt. Everest as part of a two month journey with climber and Scottsdale firefighter Todd Pendleton.

"I went to go visit it in person a few years ago, ever since then I have been compelled to put a plan together and do it," says Pendleton.

Airpark Jeep in Scottsdale donated the Fender guitar as a way to help Todd raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

"And I told them I was putting this climb together and I could raise some money for them. Since it's a high profile climb, it was kind of my small way to just do something on the side."

Todd raised $20,000 just by climbing but added another 12 pounds to his back by carrying the guitar in hopes of raising more funds.

"Most of the time you're trying to make a conscious effort not to die. It's hard to convey how difficult it is. I've done some big mountains and endurance races but nothing compared to this."

Alice Cooper autographed the guitar. Growing up, Todd was always a fan of Alice. Now Alice is a fan of Todd.

"I went down to his show and showed it to him. He thinks it's worth a lot, he thinks it's a work of art. He thinks it's pretty cool."

Todd plans to climb the seven summits. His next stop is Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa.
