Officer-involved shooting with theft suspect in south Dallas

Posted: Updated:
DALLAS -

Police say a theft suspect armed with a knife fled from a convenience store and ran from police across S.M. Wright Freeway. There were two active crime scenes Wednesday night at MLK Blvd. near I-45 & Hwy. 175 in South Dallas.

Police say a security guard followed the suspect after he allegedly stole from the store. The guard called police for backup.

When the suspect pulled out a knife, officers tased him.

Police say the man took out the prongs then ran into a check cashing store.

Officers tried getting the man out of the cashing store when the suspect pulled out a large knife. At that point we're told police opened fire.

Prentice Darden works near the crime scene and explains what he saw. "They tased him. He took out running. Police got frustrated and what not that he was getting away and they opened fire over here at the check cashing place. Like 5, 6 shots, I'm like dang!"

The condition of the suspect is unknown. He was taken to Baylor Hospital where he'll undergo surgery.

No officers were injured in the incident.
