Milton firefighters train to save horses from danger

MILTON, Ga. -

Fire departments respond to all kinds of emergencies every day.  But a special group of firefighters in Milton take on a challenge you might not consider.

The Milton Fire Department's Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue Unit came to be five years ago, and Battalion Chief Bill Bourn has headed the unit all along.  Bourn says at first, he was surprised because the department had never encountered emergencies with horses or other large animals—especially because Milton is home to a large equestrian community.  

Since they started the unit, they've responded to more than 80 emergencies, and almost all of them have involved horses.  But there have been a few other unusual calls, too. Bourn said one of those calls was about a cow that got stuck in a swimming pool.

All of the firefighters train for potential emergencies with a horse mannequin.  The equipment and training is funded completely by donations.  

"We started out with the minimal equipment, but as time went on, we added to that," Bourn said.
