Perry singles out Wendy Davis at pro-life convention - Dallas News | myFOXdfw.com

Perry on Wendy Davis: "Unfortunate that she hasn't learned from her own example"

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Rick Perry vowed to ban abortions after 20 weeks in a speech before the National Right to Life convention on Thursday in Dallas.

The speech came just a day after the Texas Senate failed to pass an abortion restrictions bill in a special session.

Perry told the convention the filibuster led by Democratic Senator Wendy Davis of Fort Worth and the actions of pro-choice supporters in the Senate gallery were a "hijacking of the democratic process."

Perry singled out Davis, using her personal story to promote pro-life policies. Perry said "the woman who filibustered the Senate" was born into difficult circumstances because she was the daughter of a single mom and also had a child herself as a teenager.

"It's just unfortunate that she hasn't learned from her own example," Perry said. "That every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential; that every life is precious."

Wendy Davis responded to Perry's comments, saying his words were "without dignity and tarnishes the high office he holds."

"They are small words that reflect a dark and negative point of view," Davis said in a statement. "Our governor should reflect our Texas values. Sadly, Gov. Perry fails that test."

Perry has called a second special session set to begin on July 1. Abortion is one of the three topics he has put on the agenda for the 30-day session.

The bill considered in the first special session had restrictions that would ban abortion after 20 weeks of a pregnancy and require upgrades to clinics that perform abortions. Doctors at the clinics would also need to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles.

The tough legislation would likely close a majority of abortion providers in Texas.
