TEMPE, Ariz. -

We all know we're not supposed to text and drive -- the same goes for riding a motorcycle, right?

A Tempe police officer has been disciplined after he was caught texting while riding his motorcycle on the U.S. 60. on Tuesday.

"They preach it to everyone, and then to see them actually doing it, especially right out in the open -- it was kind of shocking," said Justin Argall.

Justin was driving on the highway when the officer drove past him and he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

"I kind of sped up a little just to catch up to him -- to see and sure enough, he was texting the whole time."

Justin says the officer was not only reading the texts, but also texting back -- for several miles -- going what he estimated to be about 80 miles per hour, passing hundreds of cars.

"I just caught my attention because I ride motorcycles too -- so I know that I almost get hit all the time in Phoenix -- so for him to do that, and not pay any attention."

While the officer did not break any law, the department says it has policies specifically banning their officers from texting while operating police vehicles.

Justin says he never wanted to get the officer in trouble, but hopes it's a reminder for them to follow the rules as well.

"I mean it's just as simple as if he would have blown a tire or anything -- with only one hand on the handlebars.  I mean I know they're trained.."

Here is the statement sent to FOX 10 by Tempe Police:

"Once this matter was brought to our attention we identified the officer.  The officer has been disciplined and this incident is now considered closed.

The Tempe Police Department does not condone this type of distracted driving.  In fact we have instituted specific policies prohibiting texting while operating police vehicles.  Texting while driving or performing any activities that take away attention from the driving task are extremely dangerous and should be avoided whenever possible.

Training will be provided to reduce the chance of our officers putting themselves in similar dangerous situations in the future."

Tempe police did not identify the officer or how long he has been on the force or how he was disciplined.  They consider the matter closed.
