Amtrak alters NY schedule after freight derailment

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Amtrak is making changes to its upstate New York schedule after a freight train derailment blocked tracks west of Albany.

Amtrak has canceled trains 280 and 283 between Albany and Niagara Falls with no alternate transportation. The Lake Shore Limited, between Chicago and New York City, will operate with alternate bus transportation provided between Albany and Buffalo.

Empire Service between New York Penn Station and Albany will operate on a normal schedule.

There is no estimate for track restoration in the area 35 miles west of Albany where two freight trains sideswiped each other Thursday morning, causing 30 cars to derail.

Amtrak says passengers who don't want to travel due to the service disruption can receive a refund or voucher for future travel.

Workers continue making repairs after a New Jersey Transit train derailed on the Montclair-Boonton line. NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder says passengers on that line are facing delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions on Wednesday because the railroad can only use one track. The train derailed between the Bay Street and Walnut Street stations in Montclair on Tuesday afternoon. No one was injury and passengers were safely transferred from the train.
