EPA extends comment period for Navajo power plant

Updated:

PAGE, Ariz. (AP) - The federal government is giving the public more time to weigh in on pollution controls for a coal-fired power plant on the Navajo Nation.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed that nitrogen oxide emissions at the Navajo Generating Station in Page be cut by 84% within 10 years. But the agency says it's open to hearing alternatives to help improve air quality at places like the Grand Canyon.

The plant's operator, Salt River Project, has said it needs more time to do so and asked the EPA to extend the comment period.

The EPA agreed this week, and set a new deadline of Oct. 4.
