How much heat can your air conditioning unit handle?

Updated:

It happens to almost everybody: It's the dead of summer and your air conditioning unit breaks.

In order to prevent that catastrophe from happening to you, FOX 10's Diane Ryan talks to Dan Burke, with Goettl Good Guys Air Conditioning Repairmen, about how much heat your unit can handle.

Here is some of his advice:

1. Check and clean filters to reduce energy use, compressor strain,

improve indoor air quality, and to improve comfort.

2. Inspect the outside (on the ground) condensing unit to insure it is completely clear

of any leaves, grass cuttings, paper or other debris or blockage that will restrict the

air pulled through the coil which is necessary to cool the home efficiently.

3. Be aware of any new or different sounds coming from the unit or if it shut downs

during the hottest time of the day. This is an indication that the unit needs to be

serviced.  As with just about any major piece of equipment, ignoring the relatively

inexpensive repairs and adjustments can eventually lead to expensive breakdowns

at the worst possible time.

4. Minimize the operation of kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans which exhaust air conditioned air to the outside.
