Metro reduces SmartTrip minimum balance starting Monday

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

Starting Monday Metro will reduce the minimum SmartTrip balance for its Auto Reload program.

The Auto Reload system will now add more value to a rider’s SmartTrip card when the balance drops below $10, a 50 percent drop from its previous minimum $20. The lower threshold is expected to increase use of the Auto Reload program. The change comes  after riders cited the high minimum balance as reasons why they did not want to participate in the program.

More than 22,000 Metro riders use the “set it and forget it” system, which allows riders to avoid the hassle of dealing with farecard vending machines.
