Governor Perry predicts passage for abortion restriction bill

Posted: Updated:

(AP) -- Governor Rick Perry says the abortion restrictions bill stopped up by a Senate filibuster will pass in the new special session and become law.

Perry has called lawmakers back to the Capitol for a new 30-day special session starting Monday. In a Friday interview with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham, the Republican governor says the bill "will pass overwhelmingly."

Given another chance, state Republicans are expected to use their majorities in the House and Senate to pass the bill that places new restrictions on abortion clinics and bans the procedure after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Perry, who is considering another run for president in 2016, also criticized the federal immigration bill approved by the U.S. Senate on Thursday, and said issues like same-sex marriage should be left to the states.
