Thousands Expected To Mark 150th Anniversary Of Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -

Thousands are expected to visit Adams County, Pennsylvania for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Celebrations and tours are scheduled all week around the historic town.

Some of those visiting the battleground are actually descendents of the men who fought here 150 years ago.

"In a lot of cases I've had people who are actually descendants of many characters who are mentioned in my book, they've introduced themselves and told me their great-great-grandfather was mentioned in one of my books and how much they appreciate that, and sometimes they actually bring me new stories and ideas for new books, so that's been terrific as well," says Scott Mingus, the local historian and author of six books on The Civil War.

The three-day Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) is widely considered the turning point of The Civil War (1860-1865). Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces suffered a decisive defeat in this battle and would never recover for the remainder of the war.
