SEPTA To Increase Fares

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"Who got that type of money? I'm literally struggling as it is! Now you want to raise the prices by tomorrow?" Hard times are getting even harder for Temptresse Browne of South Philadelphia.

She's bracing for a surge in SEPTA fares that will mean dolling out more cash for all of the bus rides she takes every day.

"I take 7 to 8 buses a day. South Philly to Southwest if I'm visiting relatives or South Philly to downtown," says Browne. "I have to make doctor's appointments. I have to go see my mother. I have to go see my grandmother. It's hard."

Starting tomorrow, fares for buses, subways and trolleys will jump to $2.25.

Tokens will rise a quarter in price to 1.80.

Weekly Trans Passes will cost 24 bucks and monthly passes will set you back 91 dollars.

Many customers have their sticker shock mixed with outrage.

"It's highway robbery. It stinks. It's not fair to us," says one customer

"I have less enough money to do things for myself but it just gets a little bit tougher," says another customer.

These fare increases will generate 25 million dollar in revenue, which SEPTA says will go toward upgrades.
