Woman killed by suspected drunk driver was Gulf War veteran

Posted: Updated:

A woman killed when a suspected drunk driver crashed into her car was a veteran with a long history of helping fellow soldiers.

Cynthia Burks, 57, was heading to a ribbon cutting ceremony when the crash happened around 6:40 a.m. on Saturday.

The wreck occurred in the 6000 block of W. Davis Street in Dallas. Burks was driving eastbound when the alleged drunk driver was driving on the wrong side of the road struck her vehicle head-on.

Cristian Hernandez was arrested and faces an intoxication manslaughter charge.

FOX4 first met Burks in the late 1990s. She was part of a story about an Army medical discharge due to injuries from the Gulf War.

Burks' family said she continued to support the troops long after her service, including welcoming home troops at DFW Airport.

Burks will be buried at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
