Defendant pleads guilty in Justice the dog cruelty case

Posted: Updated:

One of the men accused of setting a 4-month-old puppy on fire has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

Adrian Ayers will plead guilty to one charge of cruelty to animals in exchange for a two-year jail sentence and a fine.

Prosecutors say Ayers and three other people doused a dog, known as Justice, with lighter fluid and set the dog on fire.

The 4-month-old lab terrier suffered third degree burns over 70 percent of his body and died a few days later.

Three other men await trial in the case, which is slated to start in August.
