We started our Countdown to Peachtree Road Race series with Good Day Atlanta's Carolyn Ryan just five weeks ago, and here we are now with only a couple of days to go before the big race.

You've been with Carolyn every step of the way as she trained for the Road Race. Now, after weeks of  hard work, she explains why this week's focus isn't on what you do with your body, but what you put in your body.

Weeks of running, conditioning, and stretching to get ready for the Road Race are now turning to two of Carolyn's favorite past times: eating and sleeping. Be sure to also fuel your body with protein, carbohydrates, lots of fruits and vegetables; in addition to a lot of time for rest and recovery.

Atlanta trainer Mary Elizabeth Hogenmuller, of Buckhead's Forza di Vita studio, took Ryan shopping this week. The goal: Stock up on all of the right foods to fuel Carolyn's body for the week of the race.

Mary said, "Make sure when you do your shopping you stay along the perimeters. That's  where you'll find all your fresh fruits, veggies, a little bit of meats and your dairies. When you start getting into the aisles, this is when you start getting into a lot of the highly processed foods, which aren't so good for your body to metabolize.

We start in the produce department to stock up on fruit.

Mary said, "One of the very first things I migrate to being an athlete is going to be bananas."

When you're exerting energy during your endurance sports, you're losing a lot of potassium through your muscles. It's a great way to replenish your potassium.

Next stop: The Greens.

Mary said, "I always talk about feeding the body from a cellular level out, so you really want to provide it with some nice clean fuel."

Kale is a superfood and a staple for Carolyn this week leading up to the Road Race.

Mary said, "Kale is going to provide you with lots of iron."

Next: Carbohydrates.

Mary said, "We think of carbs as bread, rice, pasta, but potatoes are something you don't typically think about; but, they're much healthier.

Proteins are a must.

Mary said, "Over here in this section, I would go for the Simple Truth organic-free range chicken. This would be an excellent lean protein source."

As you continue through the store to stock up on nutritious food this week, remember to read labels. Sodium and sugar should be kept to a minimum. Avoid alcohol and sugary sodas. Also, opt for lots of water.
Lastly, it's time to rest up.

Mary said, "That not only means eight hours of sleep a night as a minimum, but also it means that you're not gonna want to go out for a 10-mile run or a 5-mile run the day before."

Good luck with your final week preparations and Carolyn will see you at the finish line!
