CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A newspaper street vendor was shot and killed Tuesday near a Dan Ryan Expressway off-ramp on the South Side.

The man, 23-year-old Terrence Graves, was in the 800 block of West 99th when he was shot in the head and neck about 5:50 a.m., said police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

The man was selling food and Chicago Sun-Times newspapers to passing motorists at an intersection near the off-ramp, Mirabelli said. The Sun-Times contracts with an outside vendor for single-copy newspaper sales.

Two black males were seen fleeing the area after the shooting, Mirabelli said.

Chacko Chandy, the owner of a nearby BP gas station, says Graves had been selling food and newspapers there for two years. He says Graves arrived around 3:30 every morning and it was his cashier who heard the shooting and frantically called him.

"He normally comes around 3, 3:30 in the morning and stays until 7:30, 8 o'clock. I barely see him but whenever I see him, he seems like a real nice guy," Chandy said.

Chandy says he heard from several people in the area that Graves had been in a confrontation with several men Monday near the gas station. It's not clear yet if the confrontation was related to the shooting.

Graves had a young daughter and a fiance.

Area South detectives are investigating. They haven't released a motive and aren't able to say if this was gang related or random.

Graves was standing next to a red light camera when he was attacked. Detectives say they will be reviewing the footage.
