Police chase takes an odd turn

Posted: Updated:
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -

A recent Grand Prairie police chase had a bizarre ending that officers aren't complaining about.

Grand Prairie police pulled over a man driving a white Dodge Charger was going 55 mph in a 40 mph zone at about 3 a.m. Monday morning.

He stopped at Mayfield Road and Great Southwest Parkway and gave officers his driver's license. But as they were running his information, the man took off.

An 18 minute chase through Dallas and Tarrant counties followed. The man led officers on the freeway and side streets, oddly without ever going over the speed limit.

The chase finally ended when the driver stopped at the police station. He was even courteous enough to use his turn signal before turning into the parking lot.

The Grand Prairie Police Department has a locked gate surrounding it. But in this case it opened for the driver.

"We have a system, some toll tags on our police cars. Every time a police car enters the gate opens up automatically," said Det. Mark Beseda. "So when our suspect pulls up to the gate, it's closed. But when you have three police cars behind him, they open the gate."

Police said the driver, identified as Stephen Paul Esquivel, cooperated after stopping at the jail doors. They followed the procedures for a felony stop anyway because they weren't sure what to expect.

Esquivel was put in the back of the squad car for a few minutes while officers searched his car. Then he was walked the 20 feet into the jail.

Police said Esquivel did not have any warrants out for his arrest so they don't know why he ran. But he does have a criminal record for DWI and evading arrest.

He is charged again with evading.
