Good copy will be harder to come by without these two mugs in the election

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

For the first time in a long time, we are running the race for governor and the names Geoffrey Feiger and John Schwarz have not been mentioned.

What has this world come to? (Don't end a sentence with a preposition dummy.)

If you've been following Michigan politics for longer than a week, you know that usually around this time, when the speculation machine is in high-gear, these two guys always blip onto the radar screen.

You're familiar with the breathless headlines:  Feiger Considers Bid for Governor or Schwarz Ponders A Run for Gov.

How many times has the political press written that and how many times has everyone, including you, been sucked in by the specter of either one of these dudes getting in. Of course the vast majority of the time they never do, yet the media keeps running that they might.  (They actually both ran once.)

Truth be known, these two gentlemen are the media's addictive drug. It's Geoffey-poo for his arrogance and sound bite bravato and Dr. "Joe" for his moderate take on all things political.  Plus they are a hoot to be around and good copy as they say.

Like the other day when the good doctor turned up at a Gov. Rick Snyder health care love-in.  Decked out in his best Bill Ballenger seer-sucker blue suit, he demonstrated why many voters were attracted to his brand of politics.

There was Joe being Joe lamenting that some GOP state senators were afraid of voting yes on the poor governor's Medicaid expansion scheme.

He stopped short of calling it a dereliction of duty as he suggested some of them should just get some back bone and give the gov a vote.

Some, he noted. are afraid of Tea Party opposition to which he adds, "If you do the right thing, so what?"  Ah, the Joe-ster telling it like it is.

On gay marriage, he laments "there will always be a small cadre of people on the right who are obsessed with social issues…forget it.  It's O.K. The court made the right decision…Move on."

Juxtapose that candid and refreshing quip to the guy who is governor saying, "I'm not going to get in the middle of federal law suits."  Boring.

As for perennial non-candidate and barrister Mr. Fieger, you only catch him these days on the tube trying to drowned out all those Call Sam commercials that inundate the airwaves.

A race for governor without these two guys.

This won't be much fun now will it?
