Texas House holds hearing on abortion bill

Posted: Updated:

A Texas House committee has begun hearing testimony on a bill that would put greater restrictions on abortions.

The House State Affairs Committee met Tuesday afternoon with hundreds of people in the Capitol both supporting and opposing House Bill 2.

Republican Chairman Byron Cook of Corsicana says he will cut testimony off at midnight. More than 1,000 people filled the Capitol corridors to express their views.

A hearing 10 days ago began a series of protests by abortion-rights supporters. A filibuster and protest killed the bill on the last day of the first special session.

Gov. Rick Perry called lawmakers back to impose limits on when, where and how women may obtain an abortion in Texas. He says the bill will help reduce the number of abortions in Texas.
