July 4th Weekend: Fireworks, festivals, and events

Fourth of July is incomplete without fireworks, but if you are looking to extend the celebration, there are other events happening around the city and suburbs this weekend (be sure to check locally for any weather cancellations before heading out): 


Thursday July 4th:


Chicago-Fourth of July Fireworks at Navy Pier

15 minute display of fireworks set to patriotic music

9:30pm, Navy Pier. Free.

North suburbs- Evanston

Catch these fireworks on the beach.  They can be seen from anywhere east of downtown Evanston.

9:15pm, Clark Street Beach, 1811 Sheridan Rd.  Free.

West suburbs- Oak Park/River Forest

A morning parade at Longfellow Park (10am) kicks off Independence Day which is closed out by a night time firework display at the high school football stadium.

Dusk, Oak Park and River Forest High School, 201 N. Scoville Ave.  Free.

South suburbs- Bolingbrook

This celebration includes children's activities, music, food, and ends with fireworks at dusk.

Dusk, Bolingbrook Golf Course, 2001 Rodeo Dr.   Free.

Other Events:

Fourth of July at the Chicago History Museum

Festivities include reading of the Declaration of Independence, Commemorative musket firing, children's costume parade, and patriotic musical performances.

10am-12pm, Chicago History Museum. Admission to museum free for Illinois residents. 

Loops and Variations: ICE + Nosaj Thing

Sit back, relax, and enjoy a mix of contemporary classical music from ICE and new electronic beats from Nosaj Thing.

6:30pm, Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park.  Free.

Friday July 5th:

Chicago SummerDance Series: Kalapriya Dance with music from Karsh Kale Soundsystem

Learn and practice your Bollywood moves.

Dance Lessons 6-7pm.  Live Music and Dancing 7:30-9:30pm. Free.

Movies in the Parks

Catch a free outdoor movie in a nearby park.  Showings include: Amundsen park- Ice Age: Continental Drift; Euclid Park- Sparkle; and Hermosa Park- Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.

Dusk.  Free.


All weekend:

Millennium Park Workouts

Start your weekend off with a workout set to live music.  All workouts are 45 minutes long.

Tai Chi at 7am, Yoga at 8am, Pilates at 9am, and Zumba at 10am.  Millennium Park, Pritzker Pavilion.  Free.

Chicago Botanical Garden Art Festival

Explore booths of original art work and participate in art demos at the 3rd annual Art Fest.

10 am-5pm (Saturday and Sunday). Free.

Windy City Rib Fest

Sample some of the best local and national ribs at this food/street fest which has a 3-day music lineup.

Friday 5-10pm; Saturday 12-10pm; and Sunday 12-9pm.  Lawrence and Broadway.  $5 suggested donation.


Ribs are the main attractions, but don't miss out on the music, family friendly entertainment, and fireworks on the fourth of July.

4-10pm Wednesday; 12-10pm Thursday with Fireworks at 9:30; and 12-10pm Friday-Sunday.  Knoch Park, Naperville, Illinois.  $15 at the gate.  Children 11 and under free.
