Suspect allegedly sticks gun out car window in Mesa neighborhood

MESA, Ariz. -

A suspect was arrested late Thursday night after he allegedly stuck a gun outside of a moving car in at least one neighborhood.

Mesa Police say Travis Nelson and another man were driving near Signal Butte Road and Southern Avenue when Nelson stuck his arm out of the window of a car and said "stop shooting," possibly in reference to fireworks.

The men then left the area.

Shortly afterward, officers received a call about shots being fired from a car near Signal Butte Road and Broadway Avenue.

Witnesses told police the car was driving in their neighborhood when a man stuck a gun out of the window and fired three times.

The driver parked the car in the area and two men got out.

Police arrived and took Nelson and another man into custody; they found a black handgun in their car.

Based on the vehicle description and positive identification, it was determined that Nelson was involved in both incidents.

Although witnesses from the first incident were able to identify Nelson as the man with the gun, none of the witnesses at the alleged shooting were able to tell police who fired the gun or who was driving the vehicle.

Nelson was taken into custody and booked for disorderly conduct-reckless display of a deadly weapon.
