Cobb EMS crews ready if flooding occurs

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Cobb County leaders are warning people who live near the Chattahoochee River that emergency response could be slowed down if there is flooding in the area.

More rain could push the Chattahoochee over the river banks.

"We've seen flooding over the paths down by the river, where it can block the paths and block your path from getting back here to the parking area,' said Todd Cohen, who lives nearby.

Cohen fears what most people in Chattahoochee Plantation fear:  flooding brought on by heavy rain.

Cobb County fire and police say they are ready. Officers are regularly checking the water levels on the river.

"Our units, plus Cobb police, are monitoring the area every two hours,' said Lt. Dan Dupree of Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services.

Dupree says an engine from station 21 is on standby to be moved to a apartment complex.

"It's up on a hill and it's safe. But it is very densely populated. That's the reason that we have to put an engine there," said Dupree said.

They also brought in road closed signs just in case streets flood and they have to limit access to first responders.

Margaret Mera is happy that Cobb County has a plan to keep everyone safe.

"I think all the preparations that we make these days are helpful," Mera said.

In addition to officers monitoring the river, fire and police officials say they rely on people living in low lying areas to alert them when the waters rise.
