Police presence to increase at APS schools

Posted: Updated:

Police have a new plan for a beefed-up presence in Atlanta Public Schools when classes begin next month.

Police officers have already had a presence in Atlanta Public Schools. Last year, 235 off-duty officers helped patrol campuses. The difference this coming school year is that officers will be on-duty and assigned to schools full time.

In all, 55 officers will be assigned to patrol every high school and middle school in the system. That means officers will no longer be responsible for several schools at a time.

Each Atlanta high school will have two to four officers assigned, depending on enrollment and security needs.
