Dallas man dies after falling from boat

Posted: Updated:
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -
A Paulding County man died Sunday after falling from his boat and then being struck by the running, unmanned vessel on Lake Allatoona.

A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources tells FOX 5 News that Robert Timothy Lewis, 52, of Dallas, fell out of his boat shortly before 10:30 a.m. Sunday near Allatoona Landing in Bartow County.

Lewis, who was not wearing a life jacket, was unconscious when he was pulled from the water and rushed to an area hospital. He later died.

DNR rangers found the boat circling nearby. Officials say the boat continued to circle for about 15 minutes before it ran out of gas.

The DNR Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.

Officials say that life jackets are mandatory for children under 13 while a vessel is moving. They say adults should also use them. They also recommend a lanyard kill switch for vessel operators that would stop an engine.
