Woman rescued from Lake Ray Hubbard

Posted: Updated:

A North Texas woman survived several hours in the water at Lake Ray Hubbard over the Independence Day weekend.

Kirstyn Blackwood, 20, spent two to three hours in the cold, pitch black waters of the lake on Friday night.

Blackwood was out boating with friends and went overboard without a life preserver.

Her friends left her behind. Blackwood says people were drinking and the music was too loud for them to hear her screams for help.

"As soon as I saw them far off, I was like wow, I'm on my own," Blackwood said.

Blackwood said she tried not to panic and swam against the current. She also tried to backstroke toward the lights of nearby Interstate 30, but she was too far away.

Blackwood's hopes rose when a boat came by, but it passed her by.

"I just start crying.. like oh my gosh," Blackwood said.

Blackwood vowed not to give up and eventually, a Dallas Fire Rescue boat heard a faint cry and found her in the water.

"I do think that it's a miracle that I'm here," Blackwood said. "My body was so worn out and I just kept pushing through and fighting through. I probably wouldn't have lasted another hour or two."
