Police: Wife hired hit man because it was "easier than divorce"

Posted: Updated:

A Michigan woman was caught on video allegedly trying to hire a hit man to kill her husband.

Police said 21-year-old Julie Merfeld approached a co-worker about the job. That man told police, who had an undercover officer pose as a hired gun.

The wife laughed as she discussed the murder for hire.

"You don't want it done in the house then?" the officer asked.

"Cause it would be messy in the house," Merfeld said.

Police arrested her after they said she put a $100 down payment on the hit during a second meeting.

"When I first decided to do this, it's not that we weren't getting along, but I was just… It was then, as terrible as it sounds. It was easier to do than divorcing him, you know. I didn't have to worry about the judgment of my family. I didn't have to worry about breaking his heart," Merfeld said.

She pleaded guilty to solicitation of murder and gets six years in prison.

Her husband asked that she not get any prison time.
