Baylor gives nearly $300K for West clean-up efforts

WACO, Texas -

Baylor University says it's committing nearly $300,000 to a West, Texas, church that's clearing away homes destroyed by a deadly fertilizer plant blast.

The university said Wednesday that it will provide $290,000 from its relief fund for the First Baptist Church in West, where 15 people died and hundreds of buildings were destroyed in the April explosion.

The church has made demolition a focus of its work. Many residents were either uninsured or didn't have demolition included in their coverage -- an extra cost of as much as $10,000 or more.

The church has knocked down 57 homes so far, with plans to clear another 50 to 60 homes.

Any leftover money after demolitions will go to the church's long-term recovery fund.

West is about 15 miles north of Waco.
