AVONDALE, Ariz. -

A 4-year-old boy almost drowned in a backyard pool on Monday, and things might have ended very differently if it wasn't for his 10-year-old cousin.

She's only 10, about to go into 6th grade. Still, she saved her cousin's life. She had no CPR training but had seen water rescues on TV.

"They came up and told me that my cousin was drowning," said 10-year-old Perla Estrada. "I went go see if it was true and they were right."

Perla Estrada is still emotional talking about her 4-year-old cousin almost drowning in the pool. Perla jumped into the water, pulled him out, and tried to give him CPR.

"I started pushing on his chest and then water came out," she says.

Perla stayed with him till paramedics got there. Thanks to Perla, the 4-year-old boy is going to be okay. He's from California and was visiting relatives here the valley.

His mom was inside the house when the boy snuck out to get into the water on Monday.

We asked, "Had anyone ever trained you on what to do?"

Perla: "No but I see TV and I saw that you have to push on his chest to get a little water and give him air from his mouth."

For the past two days, Perla's cousin has been at Phoenix Children's Hospital recovering. He'll be released soon and might not be alive today if it wasn't for her.

We asked, "What do you say to other little kids who might think of sneaking out and going to the pool?"

Perla: "To not do it. If you go alone, something dangerous might happen so you must ask permission."

"Do you feel like a hero for saving him?"

"Yeah," she said.
