Tim Skubick: Dems first crack at Terri Lynn Land is weak at best

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Is this the best the Democrats have to make sure Terri Lynn Land never makes it to the U.S. Senate?

On the day that the former Secretary of State made it official that indeed she was a GOP candidate for that august body, the state Democratic Party trotted out this ditty which strongly suggests she is not qualified for the job.

"One Year Later-Fallout from McCotter's "Nightmare" Now Haunts Terri Lynn Land" the headline screamed.

Haunts?  This is July not Halloween.

The D's contend that because Ms. Land did not catch the faulty petition signatures of former GOP Congressman Thad McCotter when it was, "right under her nose…",therefore she is "incompetent."  On top of that she let McCotter staffers "get away with this fraud in 2008 and 2010 for which the ultimate responsibility goes to the former" SOS.

Give the D's their due.  Ms. Land's shop did miss these petition irregularities which were eventually discovered, apparently, by an intern who reviewed the phony photo-copied names a year ago that prevented Mr. M. from running again.

And while it was not her job to personally verify and count the signatures, it did occur on her watch and the buck stops there.

Ms. Land's defenders could say it was a mistake but one that does not reach the gravity suggested by the Democrats that this alone disqualifies her to run for the U.S. Senate.

It's possible that their candidate Gary Peters has made mistakes too, like running for Attorney General after spending no time in a court room other than to appear on some traffic tickets.

But this is the silly season with nothing going on in town and both political parties seek to fill the void with whatever mud they can mix. And if the media took the Democratic news release and ran with it without questioning the severity of the "crime", then the Democrats can cry out Mission Accomplished.

However, last time anybody checked, counting petition signatures was not a requirement for serving in the U.S. Senate.

If they want to make the case for her incompetency, they will need more than this....you can bet they are working on that right now.

Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

After the Detroit Free Press took a solid week to examine the charter school system, warts and all, the Democratic candidate for governor smartly responded with a laundry list of reforms.

It’s really a shame that the real world is not paying attention to the U.S. Senate race because the two camps are passionately engaged in a war of news releases, we-thought—you-should-know email alerts to the media, and a never ending back and forth as they scratch for some advantage in this bitter battle to replace Carl Levin.
