#YOLO Becomes Tufts University Application Essay

Posted: Updated:

You only live once! #YOLO. That's one of the new application essay topics that prospective students could choose to answer if they want to apply to the prestigious Tufts University.

The essay question puts the pop-culture term, coined by rapper and songwriter Drake, into a philosophical light. It asks:

The ancient Romans started it when they coined the phrase 'Carpe diem.' Jonathan Larson proclaimed 'No day but today!' and most recently, Drake explained 'You Only Live Once' (YOLO). Have you ever seized the day? Lived like there was no tomorrow? Or perhaps you plan to shout YOLO while jumping into something in the future. What does #YOLO mean to you?

YOLO was popularized in 2011 in the Drake song "The Motto." The acronym and the idea behind it have become part of the public consciousness. The term YOLO has been embraced, hashtagged, criticized and parodied ever since.
