Delaware Valley Reacts To Zimmerman Case Ruling

Posted: Updated:
WILMINGTON, Del. -

The anger and disbelief is still fresh for hundreds of supporters of Trayvon Martin's family, rallying at Love Park in Center City to send a message.

"We fired up! Can't take it no more," chanted the protestors.

Saturday night's not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial in Florida stunned a large part of the nation, and the Delaware Valley is no exception.

"It should have been a different verdict. Not saying the justice system failed us but the outcome should have been a lot different," says Layota Tucker, who protested the verdict in Love Park.

"Why would you do that? Why would you shoot an innocent 17 year old male?" says another protestor.

Some spoke with signs instead of sound, saying racism is still very much alive in America, even calling for a boycott of Florida goods.

"Keep on marching…marching till freedom comes," the protestors chanted.

A similar rally in Wilmington, Delaware, where dozens of parents embraced their kids, worried what happened to Trayvon Martin, could happen to their children.

"I don't want my children to walk the streets where people feel like it's necessary for them to defend themselves because that's when things really get ugly," says Charity Johnson, a Parent.

"I'm scared because one day if I'm walking alone that someone might do the same thing to me," says Brinae Milburn, Charity's daughter.

Here the protestors said a prayer for Martin's parents while many demand Washington file civil rights action against Zimmerman to pick up where they believe the Florida court system failed.

"We demand that Mr. Eric Holder, the US Attorney General, and the government…use this law to take George Zimmerman off the streets and put him in a jail cell," says the speaker.

"All of the details need to be re-looked at. It's just not fair for Trayvon Martin and his family that he was shot down and killed walking," says another protestor.

And those protesters may get that wish.

The justice department announced tonight that they will review the case to decide whether they will file criminal civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.

FOX 29 has learned that the FBI and the US Attorney's office for the middle district of Florida are looking at evidence.
