Twitter turns 7, continues to evolve

Posted: Updated:

The social media site Twitter celebrated its seventh birthday on Monday, and in that time, the micro-blogging site has grown into a world-wide news feed.

A total of 224 tweets were sent on Twitter's first public day -- July 15, 2006. Now, users crank out 400 million tweets daily.

The site has certainly experienced some growing pains during its convalescence. At first, no one knew quite what to do with Twitter, but the 140-character limit has always seemed catchy to those who enjoy brevity.

Blois Olson, a public relations pro, told FOX 9 News he joined up to follow the RNC protests in St. Paul in 2008 after marches, police and journalists alike started using it to share information instantly.

Since then, some significant news has been broken through the social media site -- and it's even been credited with facilitating Arab Spring revolutions. Where it may go from here is anyone's guess -- but one thing is certain, it'll be delivered in brief bits.
