Candidates for Illinois governor pull in campaign cash

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

The two Democratic candidates for governor are showing a clear contrast in how they're building their campaign funds.

Gov. Pat Quinn raised $1 million in the three-month report ending June 30. About $625,000 came from individuals. The remaining donations came from local trade and labor unions and political action committees of two fellow Democrats: State Sens. Don. Harmon and John Mulroe.

Former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley's national political connections are on display in his fundraising.

Daley raised $796,000. He received contributions from former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles, former General Motors CEO Ed Whitacre and members of Chicago's Pritzker family.

Attorney general Lisa Madigan - who announced Monday she would not run for governor - has a $4.3 million war chest.

The four Republican candidates for Illinois governor have different styles of pulling in campaign cash.

Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner of Winnetka brought in $916,000 during the three-month period ending June 30, with many contributions from top businessmen around the country.

State treasurer Dan Rutherford of Chenoa - who developed a wide base of donors while serving as Mitt Romney's Illinois campaign chairman - raised $433,000.

Republican state Sens. Bill Brady of Bloomington and Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale brought in $61,000 and $293,000, respectively.

Dillard, a longtime state senator from DuPage County, had donations from a number of suburban Chicago businesses.

Brady, a real estate developer and co-owner of a central Illinois home building company, received a number of contributions from central Illinois businesses and political action committees.

The second-quarter filings were due to the state board of elections Monday.
