PHOENIX -- It's being called one of the largest heroin busts in Department of Public Safety history.

Investigators pulled over 50 pounds out of a west valley home.

The heroin has a street value of about $1.5 million.

"I have been with DPS for about 23 years.  This is the largest heroin bust I can recall in my 23 years with the department," said Sgt. Tony Mapp of DPS' Narcotics and Organized Crime bureau.

Sgt. Mapp says this all started with a traffic stop.

"..information led to a target location at a home."

Officers actually hit a couple of homes in the west valley.  They found 60 pounds of heroin and about $250,000 in cash.  They believe the homes served as distribution centers.

"We believe the heroin came from across the border into the metro Phoenix area and from there would be distributed to different points.  Where we are not sure yet," said Mapp.

The heroin is packaged, so it is easy to hide and so is the cash -- much of it was wrapped in electrical tape.

"It is an operation where things are concealed in many different places.  That is way it is imperative for the narcotics officers to do a very thorough search to find where they had these items hidden," explained Mapp.

So far, DPS investigators have arrested 53-year-old Victor Orozco and 56-year-old Pedro Zazueta-Medina. Both are from Phoenix.  The two men were booked into the 4th Avenue Jail for transportation of a narcotic drugs for sale, money laundering, conducting an illegal enterprise and conspiracy.

More arrests could be coming.

To put this in perspective, DPS says dealers typically sell heroin by the tenth of a gram.  So 60 pounds goes a long way.
