LIGHTNING STRIKE CAUSES FIRE AT CHEROKEE COUNTY HOME

Cherokee fire officials said that a home was destroyed by fire after apparently after being struck by lightning.

No one was home when the blaze began at the home on Land Road off of Highway 140 in Waleska just after 3:30 p.m., according to Tim Cavender of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.

Officials said that when they arrived, smoke was billowing out the front door and they could see lots of flames in the home.

No one was hurt, but the house was a complete loss, according to fire officials.

A large tree about 50 feet from the house was hit by lightning and destroyed, Cavender said.

DOWNED TREES ACROSS ATLANTA

The city of Atlanta also felt the impact of the storms. Trees were reported down in several parts of the city, including one on Donnelly Street in southwest Atlanta and another on Hartford Street.

Yet another downed tree destroyed the front section of Brenda Gibson's West End home.

"The wind picked up and I just grabbed my dog and ran to the basement because it seemed to be getting worse," said Gibson.

No one was hurt at Gibson's home.

Just a short distance away, another large tree crashed into the kids' room of a home on Cascade Avenue home. Three girls were inside when it happened.

"It was just a loud noise like boom and it just fell," Aundra Johnson said.

Young Brianna Elliot said, "I was playing doll house I was trying to get the doll and then the stuff, it just fell on me and on my arms then I hurried up and ran downstairs."

The girls suffered some bumps and bruises, but no serious injuries.

HOMES LEFT WITHOUT POWER

More than 15,000 homes were left without power, according to Georgia Power's website. Much of those outages were in the metro Atlanta area.

More showers are possible overnight, and Thursday could once again see more isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon hours, according to FOX 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Ken Cook.-
