TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a Pima County Sheriff's deputy was responding to a call but didn't have his emergency lights and siren on when he fatally struck a child.

The 10-year-old boy died Monday evening after he darted into traffic on a busy street.

Tucson police are conducting the investigation and are withholding the victim's name.

They say speed didn't appear to be a factor in the incident and the deputy swerved to avoid striking the boy before impact.

The posted speed limit on the street where the accident occurred is 40 mph.

Tucson Fire Department paramedics took the boy to University of Arizona Medical Center, where he died Monday night.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/18n1LOK) says the deputy is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a major incident.
