Verizon cell phone customers now have the option to text 911 in parts of Collin County.
The cities of Plano, Richardson, Garland and Wylie are not part of the program currently since they're on a different 911 system, but could join the other towns in Collin County as soon as May 2014.
The service works like any other texting program – users put 911 as the number to text and then text with the operators at the Collin County Sheriff's Office.
Officials say the texting service could be useful in situations like school shootings, domestic violence or other situations where callers cannot make sounds. Hearing impaired users could also use the service.
One drawback is dispatchers cannot hear background noise, which can be useful in certain situations.
