Couple: Denied adoption because of pit bull

Posted: Updated:
GRIFFIN, Ga. -

A local couple says they were denied a chance to adopt a child because their dog is a pit bull mix.

Jimmy and Amanda Hollowood have a crib, clothes and a lot of love to give to a child of any age.

"Everything from a baby to a teenager," said Hollowood. "They said everything looked good, ready to go for us."

The Griffin couple, who have been married eight years decided to start a family. He is a chef, she's a daycare worker.

"I've got two bedrooms ready to go for any kids to move in," Jimmy said.

Unable to have children, they opted to adopt through Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services.

The process involved 27 hours of classes, physicals and a portfolio of paperwork.

The Hollowoods said DFACS case workers visited their home twice and met the multiple pets who call it home, including Meatball,  their pit bull mix rescue.

"He's terrified of thunder. My cat beats him up," said Jimmy Hollowood.

On Thursday, after months of preparation and of hoping, the Hollowoods said they learned that  adoption was no longer an option.

"I feel like someone ripped my heart out, stomped all over the ground with it," said Jimmy Hollowood.

They say they were denied because of the breed of their four-legged family member.

"The dog's a pit. That's a no-go. You can't adopt if you have him," Jimmy said he was told. "[Amanda Hollowood] sat in the baby room of her daycare and cried louder than the babies."

They couple is reeling after so much preparation.

"That's what really made me upset is that they've been out to the house. We even did a thing, a pictorial about the animals at our house," said Hollowood. "Everybody has seen the photos of him, you know, they asked for the paperwork, and of course his breed's on the paperwork. I'm not going to choose my child of four years just to work on getting…another one."

FOX 5 was unable to get any answers from Spalding County's Division of Family and Children Services about adoption protocol and whether dog breed is a factor considered during home visits.

On Friday, the state sent FOX 5 a copy of DFACS adoption policies, which states that parents should, "...refrain from keeping dangerous or aggressive dogs or other pets  in the home, unless properly secured with a lease, fence or cage."

The Hollowoods say they haven't decided what's next for them and their dreams of having children.
