Rats run rampant in small park in Queens

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It didn't take us long to find the rats scurrying around in John Vincent Daniels Jr. Square, a little park under the 7 train in Woodside, Queens. The park is infested with rats. Usually nocturnal, they even run round during the day, as we found out.

Sal Albanese, a former New York City councilman from Queens, now running for mayor, took Fox 5 on a rat excursion at the park.

We saw plenty of rats feasting on trash and even drinking water someone left, probably for the pigeons. After all, rats need to hydrate during a heat wave, too.

But Albanese says they're a nuisance, as he found out while campaigning at the park recently.

"All of a sudden, one of my supporters jumps out of his shoes as a rate goes over his foot.  They were everywhere, big rats...super rats," Albanese says.

The Parks Department says it has laid bait traps, and will continue to. But that people also need to pick up their trash.

We found trash cans overflowing and not even cleaned out.

"Pest control has to be a regular treatment," Albanese says.  "Otherwise, you're going to see an infestation."

Those who walk through this park on the way to the train, or like to sit here and relax, say they've had enough local "wildlife" viewing.

The mayor's office is saying one thing. The charter schools another. It is a lot of he said, she said. The bottom line is that right now the future of three charter schools is still unclear. Jennifer Duran is afraid because she doesn't know where her two children are going to school next year. Both kids attend success academy Harlem 4, one of three charter schools that still does not have a set location. The other two charters are Success Academy Jamaica in Queens and Success Academy City Hall.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
