Ga. blocked for now from executing prisoner

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia officials cannot proceed with the execution of a condemned prisoner convicted of murder.

State officials had set the execution of Warren Lee Hill for Friday.

But on Thursday, Superior Court Judge Gail Tusan granted Hill's request for an injunction that halted the execution until the court system could review the constitutionality of a law barring the release of information about where Georgia obtains its supply of execution drugs.

Attorney General Sam Olens' office plans to appeal that decision to Georgia's Supreme Court. But Olens spokeswoman Lauren Kane said a legal transcript necessary for the appeal will not be ready until Monday.

A court-issued warrant allowing prison officials to carry out the execution expires Saturday, though the state can seek a new one later on.
