Just hours into marital bliss, Jillian and Jesse Goembel got a taste of the meaning "for better or for worse."
"I did feel sick to my stomach and just started replaying the day. Could it have been someone we knew?" asked Jillian Goembel. "You don't want to think that either."
On July 6th, the Goembels hosted their wedding reception at Edinburgh Golf Course in Brooklyn Park. More than 300 guests attended -- plus two unidentified wedding crashers.
"It looks like they are dressed to attend a formal occasion. She appears to have a card in hand like she's attending a wedding reception," Jesse Goembel explained.
Just two minutes of the surveillance video footage shows one of the suspects cutting through the kitchen with the Goembels' very recognizable black and white card box in his hands. The full video captured even more.
"He appears to obtain the card box. He proceeds to walk around the venue looking for a back exit or side exit," Jesse Goembel continued. "He tries many locked doors, becomes confused and frustrated, walks back into reception area and walks out the front door with the box in his hand."
The crashers didn't just come and go either. Jillian Goembel said the strange woman actually interacted with her guests.
"Some guests remember talking to her for a minute," she said. "So, then we wonder, was she a distraction or scoping out how much people are paying attention to the box?"
Brooklyn Park Police told the Goembels one of the suspects already used a Target gift card from inside the box. Other stolen gifts include dozens of cards stuffed with checks and possibly cash. The estimated loss starts at $1,200, but the couple says the sentimental words written on the cards is what they will miss the most.
Jillian Goembel said the theft left her feeling betrayed and like she lost a "sense of security."
"We just hope they might be stopped from doing this to someone else," she told FOX 9 News.
Now back from their honeymoon and writing piles of thank you notes, the Goembels say they are also alerting guests about what happened.
"We'll never be able to thank everyone who provided us with a memory or a card in that box," said Jesse. "We could never truly thank every individual that attended our special day."
Brooklyn Park Police ask anyone with information about the wedding crashers in the pictures to call 763-493-8222.
