Gov Christie Announces Grant To Help Jersey Shore Rebuild

Posted: Updated:

Nearly three thousand New Jersey homeowners will get federal dollars to elevate homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

Governor Chris Christie announced the grant program today in Brick Township.

"This program is a critical component of my Administration's efforts to protect lives and property by making flood-prone areas of the state stronger and more resilient," says Governor Christie. "Elevation will literally raise these houses out of harm's way of potential flooding, and is an important step in preventing and mitigating damage from future storms."

Homeowners will be able to get up to $30,000 each. Experts say that would cover the cost to elevate some smaller homes, but most will be much more costly.

And that's on top of what people are paying for damage done by Hurricane Sandy.

These grants are the latest of several federal grants to be announced in New Jersey. Some of the more generous grants can give homeowners up to $150,000 to rebuild.
