DETROIT (WJBK) -

Attorneys that have appeared before Judge Steven Rhodes, who is handling Detroit's bankruptcy filing, describe him as no-nonsense, always prepared and eager to take on a challenge.

"He's a no-nonsense judge. He does not allow any funny business in his courtroom. No shenanigans," said Michael Jaafar.

The attorney called Rhodes fair and a man who adheres to a strict interpretation of the law. Of course, the challenge with Detroit's bankruptcy is that the laws are not strictly clear.

Friend and bankruptcy trustee Basil Simon said Rhodes is perfect for this position. First appointed to the bankruptcy court in 1985, he has served as chief judge during his tenure and brings a wealth of experience.

"He's extremely bright and always comes in with a fair and very legal-based decision," Simon said.

Rhodes is also a musician that plays rhythm guitar with The Indubitable Equivalents. The group has performed at conferences for the American Bankruptcy Institute.

The judge is also a husband, father and grandfather. He was about to retire, but instead, the University of Michigan Law School graduate and lecturer will stay on to see Detroit through this unprecedented time.

Due to the intense media and community interest in this bankruptcy filing, hearings will take place at the federal courthouse in downtown Detroit instead of the much smaller venue normally used across the street.

"I think he understands the needs of the Detroit community. He's been on the bench here for many years, so I'm delighted that it's Judge Rhodes who's going to be hearing the Detroit case," Simon said. "I think he's the best choice for this job."

"What he does is going to set the precedent for municipal bankruptcies all across the country," Jaafar said. "I can only imagine how seriously he's going to take this case."

The first hearing before Judge Rhodes is at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
