Suspensions of 2 former DeKalb school board members sustained

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Suspensions of two former DeKalb County school board members are being sustained, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal announced Wednesday.

Chief Administrative Law Judge Maxwell Woods decided to sustain the suspensions of Sarah Copelin-Woods and Pamela Speaks. He stated that they failed to show that their presence on the DeKalb school board would improve the ability of the local school system to retain or re-attain its accreditation, as required by O.C.G.A Section 20-2-73.

The rulings in the cases of two other suspended board members -- Jay Cunningham and Donna Elder -- who petitioned for reinstatement will be determined at a later date.

A federal judge has already issued a temporary restraining order preventing any new board members from taking office until after two court hearings later this week.

Some parents who have watched the events unfold are hoping for a compromise.

"I am working with very diligently to try to come up with a solution that accomplishes three goals. And those three goals are to remove the six board members that have been recommended for suspension, to protect the voting rights of the DeKalb County citizens, and to eliminate the need for legal proceedings on this matter," concerned parent  Jennifer Hatfield.
