North Texas police dogs get protective vests

Posted: Updated:

Some North Texas police dogs will now be outfitted with bulletproof and stab-proof vests to protect them in the line of duty.

Dallas, McKinney and Holliday police departments all got the vests on Thursday during a ceremony at Fair Park in Dallas.

Vest NPDP is the group that donated the vests to the police departments. It was created by a native Texan in 2002 to raise money to buy and donate vests nationwide.

"They're the first that go into these situations," said Susie Jean of Vest NPDP. "They're officers so they need the best protection."

Jean got the idea after watching a K9 get killed on the show America's Most Wanted.

Dallas police have 13 K9s and received six vests on Thursday.
