Gunned down Clayton Co. teen laid to rest

Posted: Updated:

Friends and family said goodbye to a 13-year-old boy on Friday. Steven Galindo Diaz was gunned down earlier this week as a group of men tried to steal his sister's truck.

Hundreds gathered at the Mission San Felipe de Jesus Church to pay respects to the teen. Many attendees were young people still trying to make sense of the murder.

"We don't appreciate that somebody just takes a life of somebody else," Alexander Amparo, Diaz' classmate.

The family took some consolation in the wee hours of Thursday morning, when Clayton County police officers arrested two 18-year-olds – Gilberto Gomez and Sergio Alvear. Police say Gomez pulled the trigger that ended the life of 13-year-old Diaz.

Police say Gomez and Alvear confronted Diaz and his older sister outside of the Diaz home. They wanted to rob the sister's truck because it had Lamborghini-style, or ‘butterfly' doors. When one of the suspects wouldn't start, Gomez and Alvear got angry, police said. They say Gomez fired a shotgun several times, with several bullets striking the front windshield of the pick-up truck and at least one hitting young Diaz.

His sisters says he died in her arms as she begged, "Stay with me."

Chick-Fil-A and the Forest Park ROTC helped the family cover the costs of the funeral.

Clayton County authorities say Gomez and Alvear have shown little remorse for their actions since being taken into custody. Each is charged with murder.

Police are continuing their investigation, saying other arrests are possible and that Diaz' death could be related to gang activity.
