Residents rally over safety concerns at apartment complex

Posted: Updated:

Residents of an apartment complex near Clarkston held a rally on Friday to voice their concerns over safety issues.

Mohamed Hassan, a resident at the Woodside Village Apartments located near Clarkston, said he received five stitches after a pistol whipping three days ago. He says two men carjacked him in the parking lot then robbed him somewhere else.

"They take everything in my wallet," said Hassan.

Residents claim several crimes, including robberies, burglaries and a rape, have occurred at the apartment complex in recent weeks.

Abdulaziz Ahmad says he'd been in the U.S. five days when burglars hit his apartment and took clothing, a cell phone and even his eyeglasses.

Many of the residents are from east African countries -- Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and others -- where life is much different.

"People are used to using cash, they trust cash better than cards because this is the way it is in Africa," said Ali Shabazz.

Off-duty DeKalb County police officers, hired as security, said they patrol the grounds regularly. However, residents said they remain skeptical.

"When you call home and you tell them that these things happen to you in America, they really can't believe it," Shabazz said.

Management told FOX 5 that they would talk to the residents about their concerns.
